Prima Levi
Primo Levi (1919–1987), a chemist and Holocaust survivor, remains one of the most influential voices in both literature and science. Born in Turin, Italy, he studied chemistry and worked in the industry before joining the resistance against Nazi occupation in 1943.
Captured and deported to Auschwitz, he later turned his experience into one of the most powerful memoirs ever written: Se Questo è un Uomo (If This is a Man). His book Il Sistema Periodico (The Periodic Table), a collection of 21 element-inspired stories, was named the greatest science book of all time by the Royal Institution.
Primo Levi Award: Honoring Science in the Service of Humanity
To honor Levi’s legacy, the Italian and German Chemical Societies (SCI and GDCh) established the Primo Levi Award. This prestigious recognition celebrates chemists and scientists who uphold human rights, promote ethical responsibility, and strengthen the connection between chemistry and society.
As nominations for the 2025 Primo Levi Award open, the scientific community is reminded of Levi’s warning: “It happened, therefore it can happen again.” His work continues to inspire chemists to contribute to a better world.
