Making Science Fun Also for the General Public

Author: Vera Koester, Jasmin Herr, Johanna Rath, David A. Leigh

David A. Leigh, University of Manchester, UK, has received the August Wilhelm von Hofmann Medal from the GDCh for his “pioneering achievements in the field of nanoscience as well as his tireless efforts as an ambassador for chemistry.” Leigh’s research focuses on artificial molecular machines and molecular topology. It has had a major impact on supramolecular chemistry. He has introduced innovative concepts for synthesizing interlocking molecular architectures, pioneered the control of molecular motion, and synthesozed highly complex artificial molecular structures

We met David Leigh at the EuChemS Congress in Dublin, Ireland, for this interview and talked about his research, the connection between magic and science, the importance of chemistry communication in an age of misinformation and public distrust, as well as his personal journey, the influence of inspiring high school teachers, and his wish to learn more foreign languages.
