Francesco De Angelis Named Honorary Member of the Società Chimica Italiana

Professor Franco De Angelis was nominated by the General Assembly of Members as an Honorary Member of the Società Chimica Italiana (Italian Chemical Society, SCI). The SCI General Assembly, attended by more than 1,000 SCI members, took place on August 27, 2024, on the second day of the XXVIII National Congress of the SCI in Milan, Italy. Honorary Membership is the highest honor given by the SCI, recognizing selected members for their outstanding support and commitment to the society. It has only been awarded eight times before. Other honorary memberships are Professor Richard M. Caprioli, Professor Branko Stanovnik, Professor Nina Berova, Professor Luigi Marzilli, Professor Charles J. M. Stirling, Professor Stephen J. Lippard, Professor Harry B. Gray, and Professor Pavel Jiru.

 

Francesco De Angelis received his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1974 from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy, under the supervision of Rosario Nicoletti. He became Assistant Professor there in 1981 and joined the University of L’Aquila, Italy, as Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry in 1987. He was promoted to Full Professor in 2001.

His research interests focused on organic synthesis, natural organic compounds, and mass spectrometry.

Francesco De Angelis was President of SCI from 2005 to 2007, a member of the Executive Board of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS) from 2005 to 2018, and treasurer from 2010 to 2017. He was President of the European Chemistry Thematic Network (ECTN) from 2013 to 2015. He has served for a long time as Representative of SCI in Chemistry Europe.

Among other honors, he received the “Domenico Marotta” gold medal from the SCI in 2011 and the EuChemS Service Award in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and an Honorary Fellow of Chemistry Europe.
