The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2016 have been published. This year, the top two spots are occupied by universities located in Singapore for the first time. Overall, China and Japan dominate the list of top institutions in the continent, with 22 Chinese universities and 14 Japanese institutions in the top 100. The most-represented countries after China and Japan are South Korea and Taiwan.
This year’s list features institutions from 22 countries. The rankings are based on the same criteria as the THE World University Rankings, adjusted for the circumstances of Asia’s higher education systems.

The Times Higher Education ranking uses 13 performance indicators, grouped into five areas:
- Teaching (the learning environment)
- Research (volume, income, and reputation)
- Citations (research influence)
- International outlook (staff, students, and research)
- Industry income (innovation)
Institutions provide and sign off their institutional data for use in the rankings.
