Jon Evans discusses the use of weeds as a potential feedstock in his latest feature on Biofpr.
For many gardeners, weeds are the bane of their existence. Hardy and fast growing, not to mention unattractive, weeds are not often considered for a higher purpose.
The Center for Invasive Plant Management (CIPM), Montana State University, USA, has been granted a $1m grant by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Washington, DC, USA, to explore the possibility that the traits of weeds that make them so undesirable to gardeners may be just the right mix of properties needed in a biofuel feedstock.
Although the project has only just started, early testing has suggested that producing fuel from invasive weeds is a viable option.
