Glenn Paulson succeeds Paul Anastas as US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s science adviser. Unlike Anastas, Paulson will not serve in the dual role as the head of the agency’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) as well. This will allow Paulson to avoid a long and highly politicized Senate confirmation and take up the position of Science Advisor sooner. An acting head of ORD is already in place.
Glenn Paulson studied chemistry at Northwestern University, USA, and received a Ph.D. in environmental science in 1971 from The Rockefeller University, USA. He then joined the Natural Resources Defense Council, New York, USA, to work on air and water pollution issues. He spent several years at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, USA, where he was the primary author of the state’s Superfund law. Most recently, Paulson served as associate dean for research at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s (UMDNJ) School of Public Health, USA. He is also the founder of Paulson and Cooper, Inc., an environmental and energy consulting firm.
