A team at the University of Oxford, UK, has developed a DNA logic circuit that acts as a Boolean AND gate. Unlike previous molecular circuits, this logic circuit is thermodynamically and kinetically reversible. The logic circuit’s reversibility means that it responds in a non-linear manner to its chemical “input” and so can re-compute its output as those chemicals change.
Ultimately, such systems might be used as the building blocks for biocompatible sensors for medical diagnostics of disease markers, for instance, and eventually molecular computational devices.
