The global atlas for renewable resources is a comprehensive information platform on the potential of renewable energy. It provides freely awailable resource maps from leading technical institutes worldwide and tools for evaluating the technical potential of renewable energies. It aims at functioning as a catalyst for policy development and energy planning, and can support investors in entering renewable energy markets.
At the moment, data relating to solar and wind power can be accessed. Data relating to other kinds of renewable resources will follow in 2013 and 2014.
The open, flexible Internet portal was developed under the leadership of the Systems Analysis and Technology Assessment department of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) Institute of Technical Thermodynamics in Stuttgart. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) made it public during its Annual General Meeting in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
