The Nature Index 2019 Annual Tables highlights the institutions and countries which dominated research in the natural sciences in 2018. Share (see picture below) is a measure of the contribution to articles in 82 journals tracked by the index of the institutions of a country.
For the first time, China is first in the Nature Index and according to them the biggest producer of high-quality research in chemistry. China’s chemistry output has grown by 17.9 %. The United States moved down to second place (pictured below). The US has previously taken first place in chemistry for three years in a row. Their chemistry output has declined by 6.2 % since 2017.
The eight other nations in the top 10 have maintained their places since 2017. All except Spain have seen declines in their chemistry output. Spain’s research output has grown by 1.3 % between 2017 and 2018.
