Lunar New Year's Cake/农历新年蛋糕

Author: ChemistryViews.org

Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year, comes with lots of candy, fire crackers, dragon dances, red envelopes with “luck money”, and WeChat greetings. The year of the Fire Rooster begins today.

Some experimental ideas for the celebration:

  • mix 85 g water and 180 g brown sugar and heat until the sugar is melted
  • mix sugar water with 450 g sweet rice flour, 180 mL water, 26 g (2 tablespoons) of vegetable oil (e.g., canola oil), and 4.5 g (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract
  • stir until smooth
  • place into a oiled pie plate or cake pan
  • set it in a large pot with boiling water and steam for 1.5 hours
  • make sure that there is always enough water in the pot, i.e., about 3–4 cm high
  • allow the cake to cool, then cover with plastic wrap

You can enjoy the cake as it is, decorate it with additional candy, or fry it with eggs. Do not try to eat the cake on the first day though. It will be too sticky.

Happy Chinese New Year.
