The Max Planck Society will restructure the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research, Stuttgart, Germany, by creating a research facility that focuses on the area of intelligent systems. In addition to the Stuttgart location – focussing on material systems with the ability to learn, micro- and nanorobotics, self-organization –, another divition will e established in Tübingen, Germany, investigating machine learning, image recognition, robotics and biological systems.
The new institute is unique worldwide by bringing together for the frist time software and hardware expertise in three sub-areas (perception, learing, action) under the umbrella of the Max Plank Institute for Intelligent Systems.
Intelligent systems can optimize their structure and properties in order to function successfully within a complex, partially changing environment. The innovative scientific concept unities research expertise in computer sciences, materials sciences, and biology.
