Werner Baumann will become the new Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer AG, effective May 1, 2016. He succeeds Dr. Marijn Dekkers, who has served in the position since 2010. Dr. Dekkers, in turn, has been nominated as Chairman at Unilever PLC.
Werner Baumann (pictured) was born in Krefeld, Germany, on October 6, 1962. He studied economics at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH), Aachen, Germany, and at the University of Cologne, Germany. Baumann joined Bayer in 1988, and held positions in Leverkusen, Germany, Barcelona, Spain, and Tarrytown, New York, before returning to Germany in 2002. In October 2003, he was appointed as a member of the Board of Management of the subgroup Bayer HealthCare AG, also serving as the company’s Labor Director. Baumann has been a member of the Board of Management of Bayer AG since January 1, 2010.
Dr. Marijn Dekkers was born on September 22, 1957, in Tilburg, The Netherlands. He studied chemistry at Radboud University, Nijmegen, and chemical engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, both The Netherlands. He began his professional career at General Electric in the United States, later joined AlliedSignal (later Honeywell International Inc.), and in 2000, became COO of Thermo Electron Corporation (later Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.). Starting in 2002, he served as President and CEO there. Dr. Dekkers joined Bayer AG on January 1, 2010. He is a member of the Board of Directors at General Electric, USA. In 2014, he took over the presidency of the Verband der Chemischen Industrie e.V. (VCI, German Chemical Industry Association), Frankfurt. He is also a Vice President of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V. (BDI, Federation of German Industries), Berlin.
