Our chemist originally worked as a pharmacist, but later received his or her Ph.D. in chemistry for work on the production of sugar. He or she was involved in many fields of the chemical industry, working on products as diverse as glass, sugar, cellulose, fertilizers, bromine, ammonia, and hydrogen gas.
