The scientist we are looking for this time made important contributions to protein chemistry, for which he or she received high honors. Later, his or her scientific interests were heavily influenced by research stays abroad, one of which was cut short by the spread of World War II.
The chemist we are looking for also concerned him- or herself with social and ethical issues, such as nuclear test ban treaties, the anti-Vietnam War movement, and human rights. His or her more lighthearted interests included a love of sailing and music.
