The scientist we are looking for this time had an important impact on modern organic chemistry. He or she was forced to emigrate to the United States early in life, and worked hard to learn English and receive an education in science. The site of the laboratory where he or she spent most of his or her career was honored as a “National Historic Chemical Landmark” by the American Chemical Society (ACS).
The discovery for which our scientist is known best was published in 1900, but took decades to be accepted by the chemical community. The chemist we are looking for never married and shared a house with his or her younger sister for most of his or her life.
