Prof. Marcello Tiecco, Department of Organic Chemistry, Pharmacy Faculty, University of Perugia, Italy, has announced his retirement. Tiecco served as one of the Editors of the European Journal of Organic Chemistry (EurJOC) in 2001–2002, where he helped to shape the newly amalgamated journal into what it has become today. He continued to serve on the Editorial Board of EurJOC during the period 2003–2008.
Marcello Tiecco, born in Perugia in 1936, studied chemistry at the University of Bologna, where he completed his studies cum laude in 1960. In 1963 and under the supervision of Prof. D. H. Hey, he undertook postdoctoral research (NATO fellow) at King’s College, London, and later travelled to the USA as a visiting professor. In 1968, he was appointed Full Professor, and in 1972, he was offered the Chair of Organic Physical Chemistry at the University of Bari. He moved to Perugia in 1976 as the Chair of Organic Chemistry.
Tiecco is the author or co-author of over 250 research papers, the recipient of several distinguished awards and has given more than 250 lectures at national and international symposia at universities and in industry. He had trained more than 20 PhD students in the areas of reactivity and structures of free radicals; homolytic aromatic ipso substitutions; cross-coupling and homocoupling reactions; synthesis of Orellanine; and synthesis and catalysis promoted by selenium reagents. Under his direction, the organic chemistry group in Perugia has become one of the strongest in Italy with good international visibility.
