Bowl Me Over with Polyoxometalates

Author: Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Collaborators from Jacobs University, Massey University, and the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology have disclosed a new polyoxovanadate, which was prepared by heating Pd(OAc)2 and either sodium meta- or orthovanadate in a potassium acetate solution, and which was crystallized as the hydrated mixed potassium and sodium salt K5Na[Pd7V6O24(OH)2]•7H2O.

Kortz and co-workers have demonstrated that their polyoxovanadate species is stable (and relatively rigid) in solution and have carried out thorough characterization including 51V NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, and density functional calculations. The ball-and-stick representation of the {Pd3V3O11} fragment (left) and of Pd7V6 (right) are shown: Pd dark blue, V turquoise, O red.
