Berend van der Meer, Utrecht University, The Netherlands, received the KNCV Golden Master Award 2014 from the Koninklijke Nederlandse Chemische Vereniging (KNCV, Royal Netherlands Chemical Society). The prize honors the best research report written by a master student in the field of chemistry, life sciences, or process technology.
The award was presented at the PAC symposium in Amsterdam on March 5, 2015. The yearly KNCV Golden Master Award consists of a golden pin and a prize of € 1,000.
Van der Meers research, conducted at the universities of Utrecht and Wageningen, both The Netherlands, deals with colloidal crystals. According to the president of the jury, Professor Jan van Esch: “The thesis itself is not a standard thesis. Rather, it is a collection of two high level scientific manuscripts.” Part of the work has already been published [1].
Berend van der Meer studied molecular life sciences and physical chemistry at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. His thesis work was performed under the supervision of Dr. Joris Sprakel and Professor Jasper van der Gucht. He has been working on his Ph.D. at Utrecht University since 2014. Van der Meer has received the Unilever Research Prize in 2014.
