The chemist we are looking for was born in Ireland as the youngest of a family of nine. He or she was mainly involved in organic synthesis and elemental analysis, working in Ireland, Germany, and France. Some of his or her most notable syntheses were performed in a small home laboratory.
While the scientist in question first studied arts and medicine at university, he or she did not get a medical degree, and later adopted chemistry as a career after attending lectures by the French chemist Jean-Baptiste Dumas.
