Professor Thomas Fässler, Technische Universität München (TUM), Munich, Germany, has been awarded the Wilhelm Klemm Prize by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCH, German Chemical Society). The award recognizes seminal contributions to the field of inorganic chemistry. It was presented at the GDCh Wissenschaftsforum 2015 in Dresden, Germany, on August 31, 2015.
Professor Fässler’s research focuses on intermetallic compounds and Zintl phases with soluble Zintl ions. His work examines new kinds of main group element-based materials during the transition from molecular compounds to solid matter. The material classes examined in this research have potential applications in fields such as energy storage materials, energy conversion materials, solar cells, superconductors, and catalysts.
Thomas Fässler studied chemistry and mathematics at the University of Konstanz, Germany, and received his Ph.D. in organometallic chemistry from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, under the supervision of G. Huttner in 1988. In 2000, he became Full Professor for Chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. Since 2003, Fässler is Full Professor for Chemistry at the Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany.
Professor Fässler has been elected a Member of the Board of the Wöhler Association for Inorganic Chemistry of the GDCh and has been its chairman since 2010. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Journal of Solid State Chemistry and Comptes Rendus Chimie, as well as Editor of Zeitschrift für Anorganische und Allgemeine Chemie.
