Professor Heindirk tom Dieck, Germany, celebrates his 75th birthday on October 17, 2014.


Heindirk tom Dieck
, born 1939 in Berlin, Germany, studied chemistry at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and received his PhD in 1966 under the supervision of Hans Bock. He completed his habilitation at Goethe University Frankfurt in 1971, where he became professor for organometallic chemistry in 1972. From 1977 to 1991, he was professor for inorganic chemistry at the University of Hamburg.

His research interests included coordination chemistry, especially of diazadienes, and homogeneous catalysis.

Among other honors, tom Dieck has received the Alexander von Humboldt Award from the French Ministry of Research and an honorary doctorate from the University of Rennes 1, France. He co-authored the series “Studienprogramm Chemie” on the German public-service television channel ZDF from 1975 to 1981 and was managing director of the German Chemical Society (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, GDCh) from 1991 to 2002.

His vision and ceaseless work was instrumental in bringing European chemical societies together for publishing purposes in what is now ChemPubSoc Europe.
