Professor Henning Hopf, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany, has been awarded the Gmelin-Beilstein Commemorative Medal by the German Chemical Society (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, GDCh) on September 16, 2014. The award was presented during the ORCHEM organic chemistry conference in Weimar, Germany.
The medal recognizes outstanding contributions to the history of chemistry, chemical literature, or chemical information.
Henning Hopf studied chemistry at the University of Göttingen, Germany, and finished his PhD in 1967 under the supervision of Harlan L. Goering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, WI, USA. He subsequently carried out his habilitation with Hans Musso at the Universities of Marburg and Karlsruhe, Germany. After completing his habilitation in 1972, he remained at the University of Karlsruhe, and joined the faculty at the University of Würzburg in 1975. He moved to the Technische Universität Braunschweig in 1978.
Among other honors, Professor Hopf has been awarded the Max Planck Research Award, the Adolf von Baeyer Commemorative Medal, the Literature Prize of the German Chemical Industry Fund (FCI), and the Hanuš Medal of the Czech Chemical Society. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the German Chemical Industry Fund (FCI) from 2002 to 2008 and president of the German Chemical Society (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, GDCh) from 2004 to 2005. He has been editor of a number of scientific journals, e.g. Chemische Berichte (now European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry) and Liebigs Annalen (now European Journal of Organic Chemistry).
His research focuses on the study of unsaturated compounds, famously cyclophanes, but also alkynes, allenes, cumulenes, and retinoids.
