This person was born in 1786 in Angers, France, and was brought up during the French Revolution. Their research influenced the soap and candle industries and techniques used in French painting.
Although they came from a long line of surgeons, they decided to pursue a career in chemistry. To this end, at the age of seventeen this person moved to Paris, France, to work in a chemical laboratory, where they were introduced to the study of organic compounds. They became an assistant at the Museum of Natural History, an institution at which they later became a professor of organic chemistry and with which their name is still linked with.
They died at the age of 102 and were honored with a public funeral.
