This person was born in Cologne, Germany, and studied physics at the University of Cologne and the University of Berlin, Germany. In 1939, this person was drafted into the army and served his country in the Second World War, during which he was injured. After the war, he joined the RWTH Aachen, Germany, and began studying chemistry. He graduated in 1950 and joined the group of Karl Ziegler, Max Planck Institute for Coal Research, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, as a Ph.D. student. He completed his doctorate in 1952 and remained at the MPI for Coal Research as a researcher until his retirement in 1979.
During this time, he was responsible for the management of the pilot plant and discovered a new principle for the separation of mixtures. This technique has found a lot of use in the food industry for the separation of fats and oils from vegetable matter, including cocoa butter from cocoa beans, essential oils from spices, and caffeine from green coffee beans.
