Achim Müller celebrates his 75th birthday on February 14th. Müller is for example well-known in the field of nanochemistry. His research focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and interactions of structurally well-defined porous spherical metal-oxide based nanocapsules, as well as their applications. Müller is especially known for his work on spherical Mo132 with a diameter of 3 nm, as well as the wheel shaped cluster Mo154, also known as the Bielefeld big wheel, and the lemon shaped cluster Mo368.
His nanocapsules with stepwise closable pores and tunable functionalities allow studying important phenomena under confined conditions performed by him and other groups.
Achim Müller studied chemistry and theoretical physics at the University of Göttingen, Germany, where he gained his Ph.D. in experimental thermochemistry in 1965 under the supervision of Oskar Glemser. He completed his Habilitation in 1967 at the same university and took up an associate professorship at the University of Dortmund, Germany, in 1971. In 1977, Müller became a full professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Bielefeld. Müller remains an active researcher at the University of Bielefeld and has published over 900 papers, 50 reviews, and has co-edited 14 books.
