Professor David Milstein, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, and Nazario Martín, Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Nanoscience (IMDEA), Spain, have been elected as the 2012 EuCheMS Lecturers. The choice was made by the EuCheMS Executive Board and was announced by EuCheMS President, Professor Ulrich Schubert. The Lecture is awarded annually to strengthen the image of EuCheMS and European Chemistry, as well as to promote scientific co-operation in Europe.
Milstein will deliver his lecture at the 4th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress in Prague, on August 30, 2012, at 9 am. The lecture is titled Discovery of Metal-Catalyzed Reactions for Sustainable Chemistry. Martín’s lecture is expected to be delivered at the 2013 European Symposium on Organic Chemistry, the exact title of his lecture will be announced soon.
David Milstein (right) studied chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, where he obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. He spent a year in the group of Professor John Stille, Colorado State University and University of Iowa, USA, as a post-doctoral fellow. In 1979, he joined the Central Research and Development Department of DuPont, Wilmington, USA, and was made Group Leader there in 1983. Milstein took up an academic appointment in 1987 as associate professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, becoming a full professor in 1993.
Milstein’s research focuses on the design, synthesis, and mechanistic investigation of organometallic catalysts for the selective activation and functionalization of strong C–X (X = C, H, F, Cl), O–H, and N–H bonds. He also studies the activation of small molecules such as water as part of the development of new approaches for hydrogen generation from sustainable resources.
Milstein currently serves as the Head of the Kimmel Center for Molecular Design at the Weizmann Institute and is on the Editorial Board of several journals, including Israel Journal of Chemistry, ChemCatChem, and Chemistry – A European Journal.
Nazario Martín (left) studied at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Spain, where he received his Ph.D. in 1984 for work supervised by Carlos Seoane and José L. Soto. After a year working in research at the pharmaceutical company Juste S.A.Q.F., Spain, he returned to the UCM in 1985 as a teaching assistant. He was promoted to associate professor in 1989 and to full professor in 2001. He carried out postdoctoral work with Michael Hanack at the University of Tübingen, Germany, from 1987–1988 and with Fred Wudl at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, in 1994. Martín was President of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) from 2006–2012, and he contributed to the creation of the IMDEA, where he has been Vice-Director since 2007.
Martín´s research interests include the molecular and supramolecular chemistry of carbon nanostructures, in the context of electron-transfer processes and photovoltaics. Martín is on the International Advisory Boards of ChemPlusChem and ChemSusChem.
