This issue contains the Nobel lectures of two 2010 chemistry Nobel laureates: Akira Suzuki and Ei-Ichi Negishi. They report first-hand on palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling in organic synthesis with organoboranes and organic transition-metal compounds, respectively (see picture; Suzuki’s lecture at the Angewandte symposium in Tokyo is freely available as a video). In a Minireview, M. Rueping et al. discuss highly acidic Brønsted acids in asymmetric catalysis.
In the Communications section, K. Gao and N. Yoshikai present cobalt–phenanthroline catalysts for the mild ortho-alkylation of aromatic imines. R. S. Liu et al. succeeded in a gold-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of 1,5-enynes using external oxidants. C. Näther et al. observed the coexistence of metamagnetism and slow relaxation in two-dimensional coordination networks.
