Dr. Klaus Engel, Former Chairman of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries AG, Essen, Germany, and former President of the German Chemical Industry Association (Verband der Chemischen Industrie, VCI), celebrates his 65th birthday on April 21, 2021.
Klaus Arthur Engel was born in Duisburg, Germany, in 1956. He studied chemistry at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in 1984 for work on organometallic chemistry. Engel worked at Chemische Werke Hüls AG, Marl, Germany, from 1984 to 1989, at VEBA AG, Düsseldorf, Germany, from 1989 to 1994, and again at Hüls AG, Marl, from 1994 to 1998. In 1998, he became Managing Director at Creanova Spezialchemie GmbH, Marl, and then joined Stinnes AG, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany.
In 1999, Engel became a Member of the Executive Board of Brenntag AG, Mülheim an der Ruhr, followed by a position as Chairman of the Executive Board of Brenntag AG starting in 2001 and a stint as Chief Executive Director of Brenntag Management GmbH starting in 2004. From 2006 to 2007, he served as a Member of the Executive Board of RAG Aktiengesellschaft, Essen, Germany. From 2006 to 2008, he was Chairman of the Executive Board of Degussa AG, Düsseldorf, which became Evonik Degussa GmbH, Essen, starting in January 2007.
From 2007 to 2008, Engel was a Member of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries AG and from 2009 to 2017, he served as Chairman of the Executive Board of Evonik. From 2010 to 2012, he served as President of the VCI. In 2014, Engel received the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his volunteer work supporting, e.g., sports projects in schools and scientific education, as well as for his contributions to strengthening the industry in Germany.
