Heindirk tom Dieck, former Executive Director of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (German Chemical Society, GDCh) celebrates his 80th birthday on October 17, 2019.
Heindirk tom Dieck, born in 1939 in Berlin, Germany, studied chemistry at the University of Munich, Germany, and received his Ph.D. there in 1966 under the supervision of Hans Bock. He completed his habilitation at the University of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1971 and became Professor for Organometallic Chemistry there in 1972. From 1977 to 1991, he was Professor for Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Hamburg, Germany. His research interests include coordination chemistry, especially of diazadienes, and homogeneous catalysis.
Among other honors, tom Dieck has received the Alexander von Humboldt Award from the French Ministry of Research, an honorary doctorate from the University of Rennes, France, and honorary membership of GDCh. He co-authored the series “Einführung in die Chemie” (Introduction to Chemistry) for the German public-service television channel ZDF from 1975 to 1981 and was the Executive Director of GDCh from 1991 to 2002. His work was instrumental in bringing European chemical societies together in what is now ChemPubSoc Europe, of which he is an Honorary Fellow.
