In this issue, the most recent Nobel laureates in chemistry write about their work and career: Frances H. Arnold (directed evolution of enzymes), George P. Smith (phage display), and Gregory Winter (antibody medicines). What were their key achievements and how did they get there?
In the original research section, Z. Liu et al. describe a large-area synthesis of superclean graphene via selective etching (see picture). Y. Apeloig et al. explored the thermal E/Z isomerization of a stable silene. T. Q. Chen and D. W. C. MacMillan developed a metallaphotoredox strategy for the cross-electrophile coupling of α-chloro carbonyls with aryl halides. H.-J. Freund et al. succeeded in the oxidation of reduced ceria by incorporation of hydrogen.
