Javier García-Martínez, University of Alicante, Spain, and Rive Technology Inc., Boston, MA, USA, has received the Kathryn C. Hach Award for Entrepreneurial Success from the American Chemical Society (ACS). The award recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who have created a commercially viable business in the field of chemistry. It was presented at the 255th ACS National Meeting & Exposition in New Orleans, LA, USA, on March 20, 2018.
García-Martínez is the founder of Rive Technology, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) spinoff commercializing nanomaterials for energy applications. The company’s catalysts are used in refineries and help to increase the
production of liquid fuels and reduce CO2 emissions. His research focuses on mesoporous materials and their modification with metal complexes and nanoparticles to improve their catalytic performance and reusability. He also works on nanomaterials for catalysis, photocatalysis, and energy storage.
Javier García-Martínez studied chemistry at the University of Alicante, Spain, where he received his Ph.D. in 2000. From 2001 to 2003, he was a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT. He founded Rive Technology in 2006. He is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Director of the Molecular Nanotechnology Lab at the University of Alicante since 2009. Among other honors, García-Martínez has received the Emerging Researcher Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2015, the Rey Jaime I Award in 2014, and the European Young Chemist Award from the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS) in 2006.
