Angewandte Chemie: Connecting with International Readers and Authors

Author: ChemistryViews

The first issue of Angewandte Chemie was published 137 years ago. Since then, it has become a leading international journal, publishing outstanding research from all areas of chemistry. At the end of 2024, Angewandte Chemie ceased print publication and recorded over 35 million full-text downloads that year. While the publication process took 150 days in 2000, manuscripts now appear online within 50 days. Submissions have also increased dramatically, rising from around 1,900 in 2000 to over 25,000 in 2024.

This success is due to the close collaboration between the GDCh as the owning society of the journal and the editorial team at the publisher Wiley-VCH. Frank Maaß and Nathalie Weickgenannt serve as Editors-in-Chief, supported by Executive Editors Charlotte Gers-Panther, Theresa Kueckmann, Xin Su, and Suzanne Tobey.

To ensure that the journal serves the needs of its community of researchers, the editorial team engages with and listens to all of the journal’s potential authors, readers, and reviewers. These efforts, which include Angewandte Advances symposia, institute visits, and author workshops, are led by Xin Su and Suzanne Tobey as the regional representatives for Asia and the Americas, respectively, and are supported by the Deputy Editors, Juty Chen, Haeryung Lee, Jeanette Loos, and Jing Tang, who are based in Canada, China, and South Korea.

Ensuring a thorough and fair review process for all submitted manuscripts is a key priority. The editorial team, consisting of more than 30 Ph.D. scientists, conducts an internal review before external peer review. The editorial office is deeply rooted in Germany, with its headquarters in Weinheim, but its presence in China, the UK, India, Canada, and South Korea reflects the global nature of chemistry and facilitates close engagement with researchers worldwide.

Collaboration between the editorial team and active scientists helps identify new developments and necessary changes early on. The journal’s strategic direction is shaped in consultation with the ten members of the Scientific Advisory Committee, chaired by Chair Helma Wennemers, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich, Switzerland. The Scientific Advisory Board also assist in complex cases. The Angewandte Chemie Council consists of GDCh representatives and chairs of the International Advisory Board and the Scientific Advisory Committee. More than 60 members of the International Advisory Board, chaired by Annette G. Beck-Sickinger, Universität Leipzig, Germany, contribute diverse career backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, helping the journal meet the needs of its global authors and readers.
