Cefic has unveiled a 10-point action plan to simplify the EU’s REACH legislation ahead of the European Commission’s planned revision of REACH by the end of 2025. The plan aims to reduce complexity, streamline processes, and foster innovation to support Europe’s chemical industry while maintaining high safety and environmental standards.
Key proposals include:
- Predictable Regulations: Clear rules with transparent timelines based on robust assessments.
- Reducing Burdens: Minimizing unnecessary administrative requirements.
- Improving Data and Processes: Efficient evaluations and adoption of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).
- Fair Enforcement: Ensuring a level playing field between EU and non-EU manufacturers.
The EU chemicals industry is at a critical juncture as it faces high energy costs, a slow economic recovery, and an increasingly complex regulatory landscape. REACH is the most comprehensive and advanced piece of legislation governing chemicals. Despite gaps in its implementation and enforcement, itbhas proven to be fit for purpose, ensuring a high level of protection for people’s health and the environment. Improvements according to CEFIC could include th eidentification of quick wins that can be achieved under the current acquis and a regulatory system based on reality checks, trust and incentives rather than “detailed control”.
