Author: Jasmin Herr, Johanna Rath, Vera Koester, Lorenz Cederbaum

Lorenz Cederbaum, University of Heidelberg, Germany, has received the Erich Hückel Award 2024 from the German Chemical Society (GDCh). The chemist and physicist is awarded the €7,500 prize for his outstanding achievements in theoretical chemistry, particularly for his groundbreaking contributions to the quantum dynamics of molecular systems.

We met with Lorenz Cederbaum in his office at the University of Heidelberg and discussed his enthusiasm for his work, the importance of exchanging ideas with other researchers and students, and how he became involved in theoretical chemistry.

Lorenz Cederbaum, born in Braunschweig in 1946, studied physics at the University of Munich, Germany, and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1972 from the Technical University of Munich (TUM). After completing his habilitation in physics there in 1976, he became a Professor of Physics at the University of Freiburg, Germany. In 1979, he moved to the University of Heidelberg, where he served as Chair of Theoretical Chemistry. Since 2017, he has been a Senior Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at University of Heidelberg.

Lorenz Cederbaum has received numerous honors, including honorary doctorates from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria; the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa; and the University of Debrecen, Hungary. He is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science (IAQMS), and an External Scientific Member of the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg. He received ERC Advanced Investigator Grants from the European Commission in 2008 and 2016.
