Bruno Scrosati, Professor Emeritus, La Sapienza University, Rome, Italy, passed away on November 5, 2024. “He will be remembered as a true leader and mentor who always combined an authentic and genuine passion for science.” reads the obituary by the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE).
Professor Scrosati was renowned for his work in electrochemical energy conversion and storage, and was among the pioneers of lithium battery technology.
Bruno Scrosati, born in Ortisei (St. Ulrich in Gröden), Italy, in 1937, studied chemistry at La Sapienza University in Rome and the University of Illinois, USA, earning his Ph.D. from La Sapienza in 1969. In 1970 and 1971, he worked as a visiting scientist at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, USA, and since 1980, he served as a professor of electrochemistry at La Sapienza in Rome.
Bruno Scrosati held several prestigious positions, including President of the International Society for Solid State Ionics (ISSI) from 1989 to 1991, President of the Italian Chemical Society (Società Chimica Italiana, SCI) from 1996 to 1998, and President of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) from 2003 to 2004.
Among many other honors, Bruno Scrosati received 1997 the ECS Battery Division Research Award and 2003/2004 the Italgas Science and Environment Prize.
