Lauro Tatsuo Kubota, Professor at the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Campinas, Brazil, passed away in October 2024.
His research focused on electroanalytical chemistry, especially the development of sensors and biosensors using novel materials. He served as a dedicated board member and supporter of the journals ChemElectroChem and Electrochemical Sciences Advances, among other publications.
Lauro Tatsuo Kubota, born in Brazil in 1964, studied chemistry at the State University of Londrina, Paraná, Brazil, in 1986 and received a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Campinas in 1993. After postdoctoral work at Lund University, Sweden, in 1997/98, he became a Lecturer at São Paulo State University, Brazil, in 1989, an Assistant Professor at the University of Campinas in 1994, Associate Professor in 2000, and Full Professor in 2009. He served as Coordinator of the Central Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Campinas from 2002 to 2008, as Research Coordinator from 2008 to 2014, and as Director of the Institute of Chemistry at Unicamp from 2014 to 2018. He also was the Coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology of Bioanalytics (INCTBio) starting in 2008.
Among other honors, Kubota received the Rheinboldt-Hauptmann Prize in 2023 and the National Order of Scientific Merit from the Brazilian Presidency (Commander Class) in 2011. He was a Member of the São Paulo State Academy of Science (ACIESP) since 2008, of the Brazilian Academy of Science (ABC) since 2010, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) since 2014.
