The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is advocating for a stronger emphasis on translating fundamental research insights and enhancing academia-industry collaboration in the upcoming European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10). Founded in 1974, EMBL is one of the world’s leading research institutions and Europe’s flagship life sciences laboratory. EMBL is supported by 29 governments and operating six research facilities.
EMBL stresses that collaborative and interdisciplinary fundamental research should be central to FP10 and underscores the critical need for sustained investment in scientific excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle global challenges such as climate change, public health, and food security.
EMBL proposes small-scale partnerships and new, innovative funding models to promote innovation and support diverse research careers, while also advocating for interdisciplinary and cross-border research funding to tackle global challenges. EMBL warns against the potential brain drain of research talent to industry and underscores the importance of supporting both fundamental and applied research to maintain Europe’s competitiveness. EMBL also highlights the need to capitalize on Research Infrastructures (RIs) as hubs of innovation and data generation, crucial for Europe’s AI and green leadership.
