Felicitas Lips, University of Münster, Germany, has received the 2023 EurJIC–Wöhler Young Investigator Prize. The award is offered by the Wöhler Association for Inorganic Chemistry of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) and the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry (EurJIC). It recognizes outstanding publications in inorganic chemistry by an early-career scientist. The award comprises EUR 1500 and an invitation to speak at the session “Highlights in Inorganic Chemistry” at the GDCh-Wissenschaftsforum Chemie (WiFo 2023) in Leipzig, Germany. The award was presented at the meeting on September 4, 2023.
Research
Felicitas Lips’ research focuses on main-group chemistry, particularly on amido-substituted silicon ring and cluster compounds containing coordinatively unsaturated silicon atoms.
She has been honored for her innovative publication “Synthesis and Reactivity of a Neutral Homocyclic Silylene” [1]. In this work, she used a bicyclic zwitterionic silicon(I) ring to obtain a homocyclic silylene ring through 1) the reduction with KC8 resulting in an anionic silicon ring, and 2) the treatment of the intermediate with SiMe3Cl. The final neutral homocyclic silylene, which is stabilized via an allyl-type π-electron delocalization, can undergo cycloadditions with alkenes and alkynes and oxidative addition with methanol.
Career
Felicitas Lips studied chemistry at the University of Marburg, Germany, and completed her Ph.D. there in 2011 under the supervision of Stefanie S. Dehnen. After postdoctoral stays with P. P. Power at the University of California, Davis, USA, and with W. Uhl at the University of Münster, she became a Junior Research Group Leader in Münster in 2015.
