CO2 Capture Technology Supports Production of Clean Energy

BASF Japan, a subsidiary of BASF SE, will provide its high-pressure regenerative CO2 capture technology, HiPACT®, to INPEX Corporation for its Kashiwazaki Clean Hydrogen/Ammonia Project in Kashiwazaki City, Japan. The project is Japan’s first demonstration of blue hydrogen1/ammonia production from domestically produced natural gas, consistent implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), and use of hydrogen for power generation and ammonia production.

HiPACT® was co-developed by BASF and its engineering partner JGC Holdings Corporation, Yokohama, Japan. It will efficiently capture and recover CO2 in the process gas from a hydrogen production facility using domestic natural gas as feedstock. The recovered CO2 will be injected into the reservoirs of depleted gas fields, leveraging CCUS technologies for enhanced gas recovery. HiPACT® is expected to reduce CO2 capture and compression costs by up to 35 % compared to conventional technologies.

The production facility is constructed by JGC Japan Holdings Corporation and is expected to start up in 2025. The project is funded by the Japanese governmental organization New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

1Blue hydrogen is an industry term for hydrogen produced from natural gas and supported by carbon capture and storage.

Why Is Natural Gas so Important for the Chemical Industry?

Hardly any other industry needs as much gas as the chemical industry; this Clever Picture explains why.
It also explains how hydrogen is produed from natural gas. Hydrogen is used, for example, in the industrial synthesis of ammonia and other chemicals.
