The Board of Partners of E. Merck KG appointed Belén Garijo as new Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Merck KGaA. She will succeed Stefan Oschman who will leave the company as planned after ten years on the Executive Board, five of them as Chairman and CEO, to turn to other tasks. The appointment will take effect on May 1, 2021.
Belén Garijo is currently Vice Chair of the Executive Board and Deputy CEO of Merck as well as CEO Healthcare.
Belén Garijo, born on July 31, 1960 in Almansa, Spain, is a medical doctor, specialized in clinical pharmacology. She started her career as a practicing physician at La Paz hospital in Madrid, Spain, before moving to the pharmaceutical industry. She held several positions at Sanofi-Aventis. She joined Merck in 2011 as Chief Operating Officer of the Biopharma business, becoming President and CEO of Healthcare in 2015. In 2020, Belén Garijo was appointed Vice Chair of the Executive Board and Deputy CEO in addition to her role as CEO of the Healthcare business.
