Wolfgang Bensch, University of Kiel, Germany, has been awarded the Wilhelm Klemm Prize by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society). The award recognizes important contributions to the field of inorganic chemistry. It was presented at the GDCh Wissenschaftsforum 2019 in Aachen, Germany, on September 16, 2019.
Wolfgang Bensch receives the award for his innovative work on chalcogenides and his dedication to solid-state chemistry and materials research. His research interests include phase-change materials, solvothermal synthesis, materials for batteries, contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), catalysis, thin-film technology, and in-situ crystallization.
Wolfgang Bensch studied chemistry at the University of Munich, Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in 1983. He then served as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and worked at Siemens AG from 1986 to 1989. In 1990, he joined the University of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, as a researcher working with Robert Schlögl. In 1993, Bensch completed his habilitation and became Lecturer for Inorganic Chemistry in Frankfurt. In 1997, he was appointed Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Kiel. He was awarded the teaching prize of the state of Schleswig-Holstein in 1999.
