The Pierre Süe Prize 2018 of the Société Chimique de France (SCF, French Chemical Society) has been awarded to Paolo Samorì, Université de Strasbourg, France. The prize recognizes a French chemist whose work is acclaimed on an international level. It was presented on May 16, 2019, at a SCF award ceremony in Paris.
Paolo Samorì is honored for his outstanding contributions to the fields of nanotechnology and organic electronics. Samorì’s research interests include scanning probe microscopies to gain insight into mechanical and electronic properties of nanostructured materials, 2D multicomponent nanoscale architectures made by self-assembly, nanocircuits, nanoswitches, and nanomotors, as well as graphene chemistry.
Paolo Samorì was born in Imola, Italy, in 1971. He studied industrial chemistry at the University of Bologna, Italy, and received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the Humboldt University Berlin, Germany, in 2000 under the supervision of J. P. Rabe. He served as Research Scientist at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche of Bologna, Italy, from 2001 to 2008. Paolo Samorì served as Visiting Professor at the Institut de Science et d’Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS), Strasbourg, from 2003 to 2008. He currently is Distinguished Professor at the Université de Strasbourg, Director of the Institut de Science et d’Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS), and Director of the Nanochemistry Laboratory in Strasbourg.
Among other honors, Paolo Samorì has received the IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists in 2001, the CNRS Silver Medal in 2012, and the binational Georg Wittig–Victor Grignard Prize from the SCF and the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) in 2017. Among other commitments, he serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of ChemPhysChem and ChemNanoMat and on the Editorial Boards of ChemPlusChem and ChemSystemsChem.
