Professor Robert Schlögl, Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Berlin, Germany, celebrates his 60th birthday on February 23, 2014.
Robert Schlögl was born in Munich, Germany. He studied chemistry at Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, where he obtained his Ph.D. on graphite intercalation compounds in 1982. He held post-doctoral positions at the Universities of Cambridge, UK, and Basel, Switzerland, before he started his habilitation at the Fritz Haber Institute, Berlin, Germany, under the supervision of Professor Gerhard Ertl in 1986. In 1989, he became Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Frankfurt University, Germany, where he stayed until 1994, when he was apointed as director at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Berlin. In addition, he became the founding director of the newly formed Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in 2011. He is also on the editorial boards of ChemCatChem and Catalysis Letters.
Schögl works on the borders of inorganic, physical, and materials chemistry, with his main focus being the study of heterogeneous catalytic reactions, including the application of heterogeneous catalysis for large-scale chemical energy conversion.
