Teruaki Mukaiyama, formerly at Kitasato Institute, Tokyo, Japan, passed away on November 17, 2018. Professor Mukaiyama’s research focused on organic synthesis. He was best known for the Mukaiyama aldol addition [1], an aldol reaction between a silyl enol ether and an aldehyde. He also achieved a total synthesis of taxol [2].
Teruaki Mukaiyama was born on January 5, 1927, in Nagano, Japan. He studied chemistry at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and at the University of Tokyo, where he received his Ph.D. in 1957. He became Assistant Professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1958 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1963. In 1973, he moved to the University of Tokyo and in 1987, to the Tokyo University of Science. From 2002 to 2009, he served as Professor at Kitasato Institute.
Among other honors, Mukaiyama received the Chemical Society of Japan Award from the CSJ in 1973, the ACS Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the American Chemical Society in 1996, the Tetrahedron Prize for Creativity in Organic Chemistry in 1998, and the Sir Derek Barton Gold Medal from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2006. He was a Member of the Japan Academy and a Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the French Academy of Sciences, and of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
