František Švec, Charles University, Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, celebrates his 75th birthday on September 3, 2018. Švec’s research focuses on the development and application of advanced materials in separation science and heterogeneous catalysis. He has, e.g., developed monodispersed polymethacrylate- and polystyrene microparticles with controlled properties and pioneered novel monolithic porous polymers.
František Švec studied chemistry at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague, Czech Republic, where he received his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry in 1969 and served as Assistant Professor from 1969 to 1976. He then became Department Head and Technology Transfer Manager at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, where he remained until 1992.
František Švec moved to Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, and served as Professor there from 1992 to 1996. He then joined the University of California, Berkeley, USA, as a Faculty Member in 1997. Starting in 2005, he has served as Director of the Organic and Macromolecular Synthesis Facility at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, CA, USA, where he currently is an Affiliate. From 2013 to 2017, he was Professor at the International Research Center for Soft Materials, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, China, and Adjunct Professor at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Republic of Korea. Since 2017, Švec is Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Charles University, Hradec Králové, Czech Republic.
Among many other honors, František Švec has received the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences Award in 1986, the American Chemical Society (ACS) Award in Chromatography in 2008, and the CASSS Award for Outstanding Achievements in Separation Science in 2016. Among other commitments, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Separation Science and Separation Science plus and is Member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Journal of Chromatography A and Electrophoresis.
