This chemist was born in West Prussia (now Poland) in the 1860s. After studing physics and mathematics at universites in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, they moved to Leipzig University, Germany, where they worked amongst some eminent physical chemists and developed an interest in this area. It was in this field that this person made their name. In particular, they are recognized for their work in electrochemistry, thermodynamics, solid state chemistry, and photochemistry.
This person was always looking for ways to apply the results of scientific research to industry; these applications included an improved electric light, and an electrical piano.
