This person was born in Baden, Switzerland, in 1906, into a working-class family and was the eldest of four children.
This person studied chemistry at the University of Zürich, Switzerland, and gained their degree in 1929. They were particularly interested in research into natural phenomena and received their Ph.D. for research into chitin, a structural material in insects.
They went on to work for Sandoz Laboratories, Basel, Switzerland, in the pharmaceutical department. Here, their research involved the investigation and synthesis of active constituents of plants for their use as pharmaceuticals. They worked for Sandoz until they retired in 1971. They published more than 100 scientific articles and wrote several books.
This person died of a heart attack in 2008 at the age of 102.
