This person was born near Breslau, Germany (now Poland), in 1884. With their father owning a chemical factory, they took an interest in industrial and scientific matters at an early age.

They worked at a steel works in Mühlheim an der Ruhr, Germany, for six months before going to the University of Breslau to study chemistry in 1903. In 1907, they obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry under the supervision of Arthur Rudolf Hantzsch from the University of Leipzig, Germany. After a short time as a researcher at University of Karlsruhe, Germany, this person took up the position of Professor at the University of Hanover, Germany. It was here where they carried out some of their most influential work on high-pressure reactions.

After the second world war this person emigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they died in 1949.
