This chemist, born in northern Britain in the 1820s, had a bright future ahead of them.
They started their working life as an apprentice in a pharmacy. This person obviously had a keen interest in chemistry, as they went on to work for a chemical manufacturing company, which they later became a partner in.
The discovery that they are best known for is often more readily accredited to another scientist.
