The chemist we are looking for was a pioneer in industrial chemistry. He or she had started out as a mechanical engineer, but switched to chemistry later on. An explosion destroyed the site of the first industrial plant using our chemist’s method and large parts of the town around it, but did not stop the success of the technique.
Our chemist had become interested in minerals at an early age, and amassed a sizeable collection of over 25,000 specimens, in addition to insect and plant collections. He or she served as a consultant during the groundwork for the Treaty of Versailles, and later became a critical voice on the rise of national socialism in Europe, causing him or her to be relieved from positions of importance.
